Provenance: given to the owner’s parents by the artist in 1909 as memento of camping holidays spent together at Cape Hangklip (Sotheby’s catalogue no.100, 11 August 1986, Johannesburg) – Many Thanks to the late Librarian Julie te Groen for copying a list of Hugo Naudé paintings in the South African Library’s holdings of Sotheby’s catalogues (letter to “Wollie” dated 22 October 1986).

Signed “Hugo Naudé” and inscribed with the title “Jonkershoek Peaks (Stellenbosch)” on a label adhered to the reverse, oil on panel 23 x 37cm excl.frame; 41.5 x 55.5 x 3cm incl.frame. Provenance in another handwriting on another label adhered to the reverse:
acquired from the artist by Wynand Louw, well-known architect in Paarl, in 1912 and donated to the NG church hostel for girls, Transvalia in Heidelberg, which was sold ca.1966-8 and acquired by current owner’s father (Strauss & Co. lot 403, 11 April 2021 Cape Town).
Signed “H.Naudé” lower right, oil on canvas 26.5 x 18cm excl.frame. Provenance: wedding gift to artist’s sister-in-law’s sister Aunt Dolly van Eeden. Their son David van Eeden dates it as sometime between 1912-1914 as his elder sister was born 1916 (letter to author 26 December 2006). Dr Julian Kritzinger identified the scene as “Entrance to the Hex River Valley: Kanetvlei at Hexrivierpoort, as seen from the Wolfiesdrift at the Hex River with the Matroosberg Mountains in the background” - Kanetvlei farm buildings on RHS (email 30 September 2019).
Keeromberg above Tweefontein at De Wet ca.1912-1914

Signed “H.Naudé” lower right, oil on canvas 26 x 17cm excl.frame. Provenance: as above. Dr Julian Kritzinger identified the scene as “Keeromberg above Tweefontein at De Wet, north of Worcester, as seen from the Meiringsberg, above Uitvlugt at De Wet, Worcester District” saying that this painting was painted in the ‘koppies’ immediately above the current N1 where the road turns between Worcester and De Wet wine cellars beside the N1. The Meirings mountain are those ‘koppies’ besides the De Wet wine cellar (email to author 30 September 2019).
