Bain’s Kloof Pass was named after Andrew Geddes BAIN (1796-1864), a Scottish engineer and pioneer of SA geology. Pass opened up in 1854, starts near Wellington and follows the course of the Wit River (Rosenthal, Encyclopaedia of Southern Africa, p.32).

Viljoen, Superintendent-General of Education in the Cape by teachers of Springbok on the occasion of his visit, 13 September 1926 (Sotheby’s cat.no.27, 11 August 1986, Johannesburg) – THANKS to the late Julie te Groen for her list of Hugo Naudé paintings in Sotheby’s catalogues at the South African Library, Cape Town. “Ratelkraal” is apparently a farm in Namaqualand. No image.

Signed “H.Naudé”? lower right, oil on board 35.5 x 45.5cm (Adèle Naudé, p.25 Fig.3). The owner of this landscape “recalls that, one day in 1927, after paging through a copy of The Studio, Naudé said: “Let’s go out and do a Cézanne.” fig.3. In my husband’s handwriting, and signed by him, there is this on the back of the work: “The painting numbered on the back ‘William Derry 2695’ was painted by the artist Hugo Naudé on the farm La Cotte, Fransch Hoek’. La Cotte belongs to a relative, Mr P. Hugo, known to us children and the friends in Franschhoek as ‘Piet Lawaai’, because of his very loud voice” (Ibid., p.14).

Signed “Naudé” lower right, oil on canvas 40 x 55cm (Absolut art code 9862). The RH margin notes in the second sketch refers to “..brown reddish water white foam spots drifting” and “white sand” below “golden reflecs.” which seem to correspond with the painting.
Signed “Naudé” lower right, oil on board 27 x 39.5cm. Inscribed on reverse “Gekoop in Hugo Naudé se ateljee op Worcester vir £12 ± 1930 by A.Rothmann” [translated: bought by A.Rothmann at Hugo Naudé’s studio, Worcester for £12 ±1930]. Provenance: Estate of the late MER (Maria Elizabeth Rothmann) “Tant Miem” 1875-1975. Anna Rothmann was her daughter (Strauss & Co. lot 511, 12 October 2015, Cape Town). Naudé painted a portrait of her daughter Anna, also on auction – see it in part 2 of this chapter.
