Artist’s name and painting title written in capital letters and underlined with “EXHIBITED CAPE TOWN SOCIETY OF ARTISTS NOV 1905” (Clevedon Salerooms Ltd lot 131, 28 November 2013, United Kingdom. Invaluable. 4 July 2024 Mutualart sale date).

A Cape Cottage – similar to 1905/6 watercolours #

Indistinctly signed; inscribed “Na die dood van my vriendin Mary Brown het haar dogter Julie (vrou van die kunstenaar Hugo Naudé) vir my hierdie skildery as aandenking gegee, M.E.R.” on a label on the reverse. Watercolour 12.5 x 21cm excl.frame; 24.5 x 33.5 x 2cm incl.frame. Provenance: collection of the Estate late Maria Elizabeth Rothmann “Tant Miem” (1875-1975), the celebrated social worker and Afrikaans writer known as M.E.R. (Strauss & Co. lot 115, 29 September 2015). (see Chapter 1)

Dated 1906 in Die Kunskamer cat.no.69 under “Items for sale”. No image or details.

Old Jetty/Woodstock Pier, Cape Town 1907 #

Signed “Naudé” lower left, oil on canvas 60 x 44cm (Roets, p.180 App.B no.33). There’s some confusion about painting details as Roets dates “Ou Jettie, Kaapstad” 1907 signed “Hugo Naudé” lower right, 1975 owner was Mrs M. Hugo, Franschhoek, but measurements are different to the Old Jetty, Cape Town of 1897 whose Provenance was Mr JP Hugo, La Cotte, Franschhoek, thence by descent (Strauss & Co. lot 31, 28 March 2023). Maybe there was another painting of the Old Jetty?

Worcester Valley 1907 #

Signed and dated “Hugo Naudé, 1907” lower right, oil on canvas 60 x 45cm (Roets, p.180 App.B no.30): 3 horses graze beside a stream in the vlei vs mountain background, paint applied in small colour spots (op.cit.pp.62-3).
