Signed and dated “Hugo Naudé ‘98” lower left, oil on canvas 41 x 56cm excl. frame (Strauss & Co. lot 479, 4 February 2013). Artnet gave the date as 1889.
Signed and dated “Hugo Naudé, 1898” lower left, oil on canvas 50 x 50cm, “unframed, neglected and untitled [title given by Roets], the earliest example of Naudé’s South African landscape paintings after his studies” so the influence from his European education is apparent. It is a scene of a woman and young child sitting beneath a large bushy thorn tree to the left having a picnic with realistically painted grasses, foliage and flowers in the foreground (author’s translation of Roets, pp.22,26 & 55-6, and p.174 App.A photo II).

Signed “Hugo Naudé” lower left. Commissioned by the Worcester Mayor Pieter Jacobus de Vos Rabie (1848-1942), great great grandfather of Dr Julian Kritzinger who has the painting and could date the commission in email of 1 October 2020.
i.e. the Rabie family farm in Nuy Valley. A very large painting commissioned by Worcester Mayor PJ Rabie. His eldest son, Johannes Christiaan Rabie (1879-1951) built his home on the spot where Naudé sat and painted “Sylvan Rest”. JC Rabie’s great grandson, Dr Julian Kritzinger, Breede Valley Municipal Councillor and Mayoral Committee member for local economic development, tourism, art and culture, recalls hearing how Naudé visited their farm in his caravan – on one occasion he brought an Aloe tree cutting which is now huge in this farm’s garden (“1869-2019: Die 150-Jarige Geboorteherdenking van Hugo Naudé – Die Man Wie Ons Geleer Het Wat Dit Is Om Werklik te Sien” Worcester Standard & Advertiser series every Thursday 1-22 August 2019, and email of 1 October 2020).
Signed and dated “Hugo Naudé, ‘99” lower right, watercolour 24 x 34cm in “The Studio” (HNH, cat.no.51). Roets, p.180 App. B no.32 “See”, has measurements 35 x 24cm.
During this time, Naudé may well have painted the portraits of his step-grandfather Abraham Paul Hugo (b.25.9.1821-13.11.1904) of the Franschhoek farm “La Cotte”

Many Thanks to Crispen February for sending this photo in October 2025 of her seated on the right. Directly behind their daughter Anna in the middle is Margaretha Louisa le Roux (b. 2.5.1852) who was the artist’s stepmother. Still need to see the possibly unfinished portrait (Unsigned oil on canvas 75 x 60cm – see Roets, p.179 App.B no.18: “The story goes that the old woman died before her portrait was fully completed, namely 1902, as it states in the family Bible” (ibid. p.39).

Dated 1974 [sic] on an internet auction sale 29 May 2012. Possibly signed lower right, oil on card, 26 x 36cm/10.2 x 14.2in. In 1874 Naudé would have been only 4 years old; makes more sense if it was painted in 1904 because of the bolder, more distinctive brushstrokes?
Signed “Hugo Naudé” and dated 1904 lower right. Inscribed with the title on the reverse, pen ink and watercolour 10.5 x 15.5cm (Stephan Welz & Co. lot 203, 31 July 2006, Johannesburg).
In Philip Naudé’s family tree “’n Geslags register van David Francois Naudé – sy voorsate en sy afstammelinge”, the first born of the artist’s grandfather David Naudé (1784-1869) who bought the farm “Aan-de-Doorns” in 1831, and Maria Magdalena Cloete (1793-1854), was Anna Susanna who married Casper van Blerck. “Miss van Blerck” was the elder sister of the Artist’s father David Francois and therefore his aunt. She is described as “The Artist’s Governess” in cat.no.5 of the Memorial Exhibition, opened on 13 March 1945 (Brown Family Papers at UCT Libraries’ Special Collections BC 597 B9). This would explain the title “Miss”.↩︎
