Signed and dated “Hugo Naudé. ‘97” lower right, oil on canvas 49.5 x 49.5cm excl. frame; 61.5 x 61.5 x 5.5cm incl.frame. Provenance: acquired from the artist by NC Krone, thence by descent (Strauss & Co. lot 842, 8 November 2020).

There is a typed and handwritten note in English and Afrikaans on the reverse of this painting:

NC “Cope” Krone went on Naudé’s “Grand Tour of Europe” in 1913.72

View over the Matopos 1897 #

Signed “Hugo Naudé” lower left, oil on canvas 56 x 46cm/22 x 18.1in. excl.frame (Strauss & Co. lot 189, 30 June 2014). SAHRIS permit application from Bonhams SA to export artwork to Bonhams London for sale, 16 January 2013 has measurements 68.5 x 56.5cm/26 15/16 x 22¼ in.

Waterfall #

Possible signature lower left? Watercolour 28 x 23.5cm/11 x 9.3in. (artnet sale 15 February 2014).

Victoria Falls on the Zambezi River #

No details yet. There is a signed Victoria Falls on panel 28.5 x 39cm. Provenance: Wilbur Smith (Stephan Welz & Co. lot 890, 14 February 2007) but no image available.

This humorous sketch in a similar sketchbook to the above Matopos and Victoria Falls’ sketches is entitled Our Artist negotiating the rapids near Livingstone Island and illustrates trees, palms, a hippo, crocodile, our Artist, playtepus, the sun and to the right Naudé Artist painting under an umbrella smoking a cigar to chase away a cloud of flies surrounding him

The Old Jetty, Table Bay Harbour Cape Town 1897 #

Signed and dated “Hugo Naudé ‘97” lower right, oil on canvas 39 x 50.5cm excl.frame; 57 x 69 x 3.5cm incl.frame. Provenance: Mr JP Hugo, La Cotte Franschhoek, thence by descent (Strauss & Co. lot 31, 28 March 2023). Illustrated in Stephan Welz, Art at Auction in SA, p.74 (lot 90, 18 October 1993). Compare with Turneresque Old Jetty, Cape Town/Woodstock Pier of 1907 below.

Naudé must have known that “celebrated characters, eminent navigators and men of science had passed along this same platform”,73 e.g. Charles Darwin in June 1836 and Sir John Herschel 1834-8…

Portraits of a Huguenot lady (profile) c.1897 #

Unsigned oil on canvas 46 x 55cm at the SANG now Iziko Museum, Cape Town (Adèle Naudé, Hugo Naudé, p.42 Fig.25). Their list of holdings gives measurements 48 x 40cm and dates it c1897; acquisition method: purchased, and restored May 1983 (ID: 597).
